File transfer vs cloud storage: which one to choose for delivering to a client

"I'll send it to you on Drive" or "I'll send it to you via WeTransfer": two common reflexes, for two needs that are actually quite different.

File transfer and cloud storage answer two distinct logics. Transfer sends a piece of content, once, to someone. The cloud stores content, continuously, for you or for permanent shared access. Using one for the other's purpose always creates friction.

The cloud (Drive, Dropbox): built to store and collaborate

A shared cloud folder is excellent for ongoing collaborative work (a team editing the same files) or for your own backup. It is less suited to a one-off delivery: complex access-rights management, no staging of the delivery, and the risk of a client stumbling onto other folders on the same account.

Transfer (WeTransfer and equivalents): built to send, once

A transfer tool delivers specific content at a specific moment, then wipes it. It is the right reflex for a client delivery, but generic tools stay limited: an anonymous link, no reliable tracking, sometimes advertising at the moment of reception.

The right tool for a recurring client delivery

To deliver to clients regularly, neither the generic cloud nor the generic transfer really does the job: what's missing is the staging (your brand), the tracking (who opened, downloaded, approved) and the control (expiry, password). xFer combines the one-off delivery logic of transfer with the tracking and presentation a generic cloud does not offer.

In short

The cloud to store and collaborate continuously, transfer to deliver once. For a recurring client delivery that also has to carry your brand and be tracked, neither one taken alone really does the job.

Deliver your next project in your brand.
